Four weeks to a smooth local move

Local moves don't need a two-month runway — four focused weeks covers it. What they do need is sequencing: booking early enough to get your date, utilities lined up city by city (Washington's utilities are municipal, so every city has its own providers), and packing that finishes before, not during, moving day.

Week 4 — lock the plan

Request quotes and compare hourly rates, minimums, and travel billing side by side
Book your crew — or your truck rental plus labor-only crews if you're going hybrid
Give landlord notice per your lease if renting
Look up utility providers for the new address — they change city to city across Washington
Purge first, pack second: donate and sell now so you don't pay to move it

Week 3 — the paperwork week

Schedule utility stops and starts around your move date
Order internet installation at the new place — some Washington providers book out weeks
File USPS mail forwarding
Ask both buildings (if applicable) about elevator reservations and mover-insurance requirements
Start packing storage areas, garage, and off-season items

Week 2 — pack in earnest

Box everything you won't touch again, labeled by destination room
Disassemble furniture you're comfortable taking apart; bag and tape hardware to each piece
Confirm crew size, arrival window, and both addresses with your provider
Plan truck parking at both ends — save a curb spot with your own car if needed
Set aside the do-not-load pile: documents, valuables, medications, first-night kit

Move week and after

Finish every box the night before — the clock punishes day-of packing
Defrost and dry the freezer at least a day ahead
Walk the crew through, point out fragile items, and stay reachable all day
Final sweep of closets, dishwasher, garage rafters, and crawl space before locking up
Update your Washington DOL address online, then voter registration — ballots mail to your registered address — plus bank and insurance
